Brilliance and Fire
Moissanite is the most brilliant gemstone in existence. They are famous for their double refraction, giving them the ability to throw light further in a dazzling array of colors. Moissanite's light refraction rate of 2.65 to 2.69 is greater than that of any other gemstone, including diamonds. This means that the sparkle of the stone is more noticeable when worn than any other type of stone. It can been seen from greater distances. When most people see moissanite in person, they instantly fall in love with how they look.
Durability
Moissanite is incredibly hard with a hardness rating of 9.25 - 9.5 on the Moh's hardness scale. This makes it the second hardest substance on Earth. It's even harder than steel, which has a rating of 6.
Moissanite is incredibly difficult to scratch due to it's high hardness rating. Scratches are what makes clear surfaces look hazy and cloudy. Think worn out plexiglass or scratched up windows. For your jewelry, this means that the stone will be long lasting and always be beautiful.
Value
Moissanite is an incredible value when compared to it's main competitor which are diamonds. Virtually any desired size or quality is attainable and relatively affordable. Large, high quality varieties are no longer reserved only for the rich.
Ethical
Virtually all moissanite used in the jewelry industry are grown in labs. Natural moissanite is extremely rare and uncommon. This eliminates the need for mining, which causes long lasting damage to the environment and also contributes to climate change.
Natural moissanite was discovered in 1893 by nobel-prize winning chemist, Dr. Henri Moissan, while examining crystals found in a meteor crash site in Arizona. Shockingly similar to diamonds visually, Dr. Moissan initially thought he had discovered diamonds. After studying the chemical composition of the crystals, it turns out he had discovered a completely new type of substance. One that is literally out of this world.
Raw diamond crystals are made out of pure carbon, while moissanite is made out of Silicon Carbide (SiC), which is carbon and silicon atoms bonded together. Using extreme pressure and heat, lab technicians use silicon and carbon powder and re-create the natural conditions that form silicon carbide crystals in a greatly reduced time period. It takes 2-3 months to grow raw moissanite crystals in a lab.
After the raw synthetic moissanite crystals cool, they are sent off to experienced gem cutters for faceting and full finishing. The moissanite gemstone is now ready to be set onto jewelry.
Can People Tell Moissanite from Diamond?
While moissanite does have a higher brilliance than diamond due to it's double-refractive characteristics, the majority of the public will not be able to tell the difference between a diamond and a moissanite. They are overall very similar looking when set on jewelry.
Moissanite is so similar to diamond that it's even known to pass diamond testers. This is due to it's ability to conduct heat which is what many diamond testers rely on.
Does Moissanite Come in different grades?
Moissanite comes in a wide range of quality and prices. Low quality moissanite is mass produced and priced very cheap. They often display a slight blue, brown or gray hue under certain lighting.
The quality of the gem cutting is also very important in determining how the stone will look. Cheap stones are cut by lower skilled workers during mass production, resulting in an overall less beautiful stone.
At Segen Luxury, we hand select our stones from the top 10% of moissanite. We select true DEF colorless stones only from top tier gem cutters.
Is moissanite a fake diamond?
Moissanite is an affordable alternative to a diamond, but it is not a fake diamond or an imitation. Though it looks very similar to a diamond, it is a completely different gemstone. For the same reason, a blue colored diamond would not be considered a fake sapphire and a ruby would not be considered a fake red colored diamond.
Moissanite is often compared to a diamond due to both having very similar characteristics. Both gemstones are carbon based. Both are highly durable, and often white in color.
How do I care for Moissanite Jewelry?
Moissanite is very easy to care for. If you have a cleaning product for diamonds, you can use the exact same thing to clean moissanite. If you don't have liquid jewelry cleaner, the easiest at-home solution is to mix warm water with a few drops of hand soap or window cleaner. The stones can be cleaned with this solution using a soft or old toothbrush. Carefully and thoroughly clean all sides of the jewelry item or stone, then rinse with lukewarm water. Your moissanite jewelry will look new once again!
Here at Segen Luxury, we only carry premium grade moissanite. Our stones are colorless, resembling the DEF range in the world of diamonds. All stones are VVS+ clarity and come from experienced gem cutters.
